Former President John Dramani Mahama has said that the current nature of the Free SHS policy, if not altered, will be a major contributor to the astronomically increasing unemployment in Ghana.
He linked this to the fact that over the years, young people prefer to migrate into the major centers because of job opportunities.
This, according to him is because chunk of these graduates do not have technical skills and therefore look up to a governmental organization for employment.
He alternatively suggested that more attention should be given to technical and vocational training, so as to equip Ghanaian youths with the necessary skills to help them opt for setups and entrepreneurship rather than relying on the few employment opportunities in the public sector.
The 2020 Running Mate for John Mahama and a Former Education Minister, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang also added that there was the need to plan ahead before the implementation of the Free SHS.
“Per the current birth rate, the country should start planning towards increasing infrastructure in the education sector. This will help prevent unforseen pressure on the current partially insufficient ones that we have.” she said.
